June 2–August 30, 2015

What do baby ladybugs look like? Why don’t ferns have flowers? Why are there pigeons everywhere? Do you ever wonder things like that? Then you would make a terrific naturalist! A naturalist observes plants, animals, and other living things closely, asks questions, and tries to learn the answers.

In celebration of the June opening of the new Discovery Garden, the summer gallery exhibit features artwork from the Garden's book for young naturalists, The Kid’s Guide to Exploring Nature. The environmental scenes created by children’s book illustrator Laszlo Veres in partnership with members of Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Education staff show dozens of the plants and animals found in the forests, ponds, and meadows in the northeastern United States, including in New York City and other cities nearby. Character illustrations by BBG’s graphic designer Manny Jose depict some of the real careers naturalists may choose today.
